Dear Mrs. Bornstein my wife and I met Mel and yourself as well as 145 fellow Jews at a fabulous Channuka party for in Puerto Vallarta about 4 years ago. We just learned of Mel’s passing while searching the internet. We were very saddened by this news. We want to let you and your family know how much we appreciated the leadership and friendship shown to us by you and your husband of blessed memory. He helped us and our dear friends share in a wonderful Jewish event far away from home during our travels. No doubt as I have read he was a great friend to all people especially to the kids of PV.
Barbara and family please accept our belated sincere condolences and may your life moving forward be filled with wonderful memories of your beloved husband.

Sandy and I, like so many Jewish friends, met Mel in Puerto Vallarta though our suburban Chicago homes were but a few miles apart. We were able to attend a wonderful outdoor Friday night service in the Old Town neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta that he helped organize a few years ago. What a nice man! He will be missed both north and south of the border.

We first met Barbara and Mel on the beach in Puerto Vallarta on December 29th, 1994, who immediately asked us to join them at a New Year’s Eve party at Chez Elaine. We went and almost froze to death but the warmth of the Bornstein’s was felt for, ever since.
Everyone in PV knew Mel and they loved him. When one mentioned Mel Bornstein, he was known as Mr. IFC or the Jewish Mayor of Puerto Vallarta. Mel was a force and had a passion for whatever he undertook. His dream of creating a Jewish Community Center in Puerto Vallarta never was realized, although given a few more years it probably would have been.
Dear Mel, you will be sadly missed and Puerto Vallarta will never be the same.
